It seems we've reached the end of the line when it comes to Drain-Ex and the big 2 or 3 days shows. For the past three years, we have teamed up with Tip-Ex Tank-Ex to bring you Drain-Ex, and I don't know if it's a reflection on UK events in general, or the uncertainty surrounding Brexit, but we struggled to attract the number of exhibitors required to put on a proper event, and struggled to get enough visitors through the door to make it a worth while event for the exhibiting companies.
We would like to thank everyone who has exhibited with us over the years, as well as those visitors who made it down to see what we had to offer. Drains is obviously too niche a subject to fill the hall with enough relevant visitors, which is one of the reasons we teamed up with Tip-Ex Tank-Ex in the first place - but this was obviously the wrong choice.
And yet, our advertisers and exhibitors still say that they need a UK event of some description to showcase their wares, and as a magazine we feel like we should be offering you more than just pages.. and so what is this 'something' that we need in the UK?
One option is roadshows, but we've tried this already. We had hoped that the demise of the WSW roadshows would give us room to make a go at this, but disappointing numbers soon put a stop to any future roadshow plans.
Another suggestion is perhaps a series of 'Open Days', using manufacturers' and operators' yards and premises around the UK as a venue for a day of advice, demonstrations, talks, special offers, etc.. We'd love to hear what you think about this. Would you be more likely to come as a visitor if we bought the event local to you? Would you like to join the series as an exhibitor? Do you have a large yard we could use as a venue? All suggestions welcome as we start to plan for the future.
